1 From Behind the Veil DHU'L NUN AYYOUB Dhu'f Nun Ayyoub (I908- ) is one of Iraq's most prominent writers, who often depicts the clash between Islamic tradition and modernity. The emphasis on modesty and honor in traditional Islamic society led over time to the practice of women wearing veils when they were in public. It became customary that the only men to look on a woman's face were her father and brothers and, eventually, her husband. This tradition began to die out in the I920s, but has been revived in some Muslim countries in the last two decades.
